NYC Restaurant Grades

For those who live in or visit New York City, the Health Department provides an invaluable service that grades restaurants according to "food handling, food temperature, personal hygiene, facility and equipment maintenance and vermin control."  About 24,000 restaurants are inspected each year, and just in October 2012 alone, 24 restaurants were closed by the Health Department after being reinspected and continuing to receive a poor score (restaurants have two chances to earn an A in every inspection cycle, according to the site, so these restaurants had their chance...)

The grades are required to be posted in the restaurant's window, so those that don't receive an A are surely financially impacted by donning this badge of shame.

When you search for a restaurant either from this page, or at the Health Department website, you can see it's grade history over time, so you may want to think twice before eating at a place that consistently doesn't care to follow food safety protocols.
